Kazoku Kai International Camp June 2006

This year the camp was again hosted by TMSK and focused on a variety of kumite drills and two very traditional katas and their bunkais - Chito-Ryu Bassai and Ryuei Ryu Paichu.
The camp began June 2, Friday night, with Sensei D. Ridgeway (6th Dan Shito-Ryu and Chief Instructor for Kazoku Kai International) introducing the the first 10 drills of the Wado Gumite Gata that stresses much on simultaneous block & attack and following up with a knee attack to the opponent's knee to unbalance and create damage to the joint.
Saturday morning Sensei T. Mah (5th dan Shito-Ryu & 4th dan Chito-Ryu) taught the Chito-Ryu Bassai and the bunkais, one of the few katas that utilizes the shuto and nukite quite a bit and most likely has some historical ties to the Kyan Bassai and Tomari Bassai.
Saturday afternoon Sensei P. Collins (5th dan Shotokan, England) showed some very good kumite drills from Kase Sensei's training system.
Following the Saturday training session England, The Canary Islands, and Canada took part in a team kumite competition. The British team was very impressive with excellent techniques, size and speed. They took 1st place. The Teneriffe team from the Canary Islands came 2nd, and Canada took the bronze.
Saturday evening took us to Celina Manson's lakeshore residence where everyone had a great time at the BBQ. SHOWA, TMSK's fundraising society did a wonderful job in providing everyone with an excellent meal. There was much enjoyment of the alcohol that night. Some of the younger members from England and Teneriffe took part in a drinking contest from a funnel. I think a few of them were not feeling too good the next day as they did not make the Sunday morning training.
Sunday morning began with Sensei D. Ridgeway teaching the Ryuei Ryu Paichu. A beautiful Okinawan kata that makes use of simultaneous defense and attack skills not commonly seen in other katas. In the afternoon Sensei M. Scales (6th dan Shotokan, Canada) taught some kumite drills relevant for tournaments.
Again the camp was an eye-opening experience for many who attended. A good time was had by all. The appreciation expressed by many who attended was the fact that there is so much knowledge out there and this knowledge is not limited to any one style or one group. Martial arts is many things but benefit only those who keep an open mind. For those who seek greater knowledge and skills this camp can contribute greatly to that endeavor.
The 3rd Kazoku Kai International Camp is tentatively scheduled for the first June weekend in 2007. TMSK will host the event again. We look forward to many new and old faces next year. If you have the desire to expand your karate horizon we encourage you to make plans to join us in 2007. If you like to be on our mailing list for this event in 2007 please send your e-mail address to ktmafc@shaw.ca and we will send you the info when it is available.
HAPPY TRAINING!!!
